A Brief Take On Captain America: Brave New World

A Brief Take On Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World Tries To Set The Tone

After seeing Captain America: Brave New World in theaters, I find myself oscillating between hope and slight disappointment for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anthony Mackie's return as Sam Wilson, now bearing the mantle of Captain America, is a significant moment for the franchise. His portrayal is compelling, and he manages to infuse his own identity into the role while honoring Steve Rogers' legacy.

The film tries to set itself up as an action-adventure thriller while taking notes from "Captain America: Winter Soldier." You can see the parallel between the two movies, which is not a bad thing. The film mirrors certain beats from its predecessor but also introduces changes, adding a fresh perspective to familiar elements.

One of the commendable aspects is the contained storyline that stays true to the main plot with minor subplots. The narrative focuses on the dynamic between Sam and Ross, who are locked in a relentless pursuit of the same target. The simplicity of this cat-and-mouse chase keeps the audience engaged without unnecessary distractions.

However, the utilization of characters is a significant flaw in the film. Giancarlo Esposito, a renowned actor, is underutilized, despite being prominently featured in trailers. His screen time is limited to around 10 minutes, leaving the audience craving more of his captivating presence. His scenes are undoubtedly great, but the potential for a more substantial role was missed.

Disney Continues Its CGI Habits

The movie also addresses the Celestial in the ocean, which ties into President Ross's major treaty. This plot element adds an interesting layer to the narrative, though it does not overshadow the central conflict.

One of the major issues with the film is the background CGI. Numerous scenes suffer from poorly executed CGI, disrupting the immersion. The disparity between the characters and the background is noticeable, making it difficult to stay engaged. It appears that the CGI budget prioritized Red Hulk, leaving other scenes with subpar effects. Poor CGI is somehow nothing new in Hollywood movies now, especially Disney. It is honestly mind-blowing how YouTube creators can make such passionate storylines and almost top-tier CGI with a very limited budget, but I suppose that is a conversation in itself for another day.

At around 2 hours, "Captain America: Brave New World" does not feel overly lengthy, but certain cuts could have streamlined the story better. Despite its flaws, the film serves its purpose in advancing the Marvel Cinematic Universe and solidifying Sam Wilson's role as Captain America.

"Captain America: Brave New World" offers an acceptable start to the year for Marvel, with a balance of upsides and downsides. While it may not be a flawless film, it contributes to the ongoing narrative and provides sufficient entertainment for fans of the franchise.
