Fighting games became a niche genre for the longest time, especially in America. Gone were the days of packed fighters and tons of weekend tournaments. But now with everyone suffering from battle royale exhaustion gamers are looking back to fighters for their PvP fix and the last couple of years have been delivering...with some caveats. No longer can players earn new fighters in games via unlocks for playing or completing certain objectives, but you must now PAY for your new characters regardless. Fighting games now abuse the Microtransactions that have been plaguing games since the mid-2000s and probably are the worst about it as characters are a huge part of fighting games and placing them behind a pay-wall in an already $50-$70 game has become common ground.
